Permanent Blue Hair Dye

It tried a few other blue hair color products but I can’t remember the names anymore. None of them worked any better. I also tried surfing the web to see if there were any permanent blue hair dyes out there. So far, it looks like there isn’t. All I found was the semi-permanents that I tried and some temporary ones that wash out after one shampoo. So at this point I have resorted to just using blue hair extensions to create a streaked effect. They look pretty good but I would still rather be able to dye my hair blue permanently. If anyone out there has had better luck finding permanent blue hair dye, please let me know.

great blog. I wish that I could dye my hair blue, but for now I'll just settle for the occasional streak of blue.

I have blue and purple hair...got my hair dye from The Garment District online store - get the Special Effects hair dye. I like to bleach first and then the color takes better, it says permanent, but I have it months later, just a more faded version is all. I usually get a good month of superb color.

I've never actually dyed my hair. However, in high school (edging onto 20 years ago), I occasionally would color my hair red with some sort of spray-on stuff, so it wouldn't be unusual for people to see me with some funky coloration on my head.

The thing was, my natural color was deep, deep black. So black that, if the light was hitting me just right (usually from behind), my hair would get this bluish tinge to it. People would see that, and assume I was coloring my hair again!

It's not easy being blue...

I was wondering if you bleach out first. I do, and skip the conditioning step in the ultra light bleach kit and put the blue right in. Then I supercondition for about 20 minutes after rinsing out the blue. I have found the dye really takes to the freshly bleached out hair.

yup! i bleach first before putting on the blue. i actually bleach my hair twice to get it really light. the product labels for bleaching always say never to bleach twice coz it might cause the hair to break but unless i do that, my hair just won't get light enough for the blue to stick. i use johnson's baby shampoo coz it is very mild. if you ever find a permanent blue dye, let me know!

Thanks for being my guinea pig! I have always wanted blue hair, but my hair is very dark. It looks black, but in sunlight you can see a red/auburn tinge to it. Did you have the extensions put in proffesionally or just do it yourself type thing? That sounds really interesting to me...I would love at least a splash of color.

Great blog!

Looks really good. I'm nervous as I've just done the blue, and it's bleeding out like crazy everytime I shower...

I hope you figure it out so I'll know what to do for next time!

You should ask a stylist where to find bluing shampoo. Lots of little old ladies use it (hence the name 'blue hairs') and it can help to prolong your color. My friend who is a stylist did my hair with a professional color that was a brilliant electric blue. I bleached my bangs out and just change the color when I feel like it. It was something-"Ink" I think? I'm seeing her on Monday, I'll ask then for you!!

hi, I'm a cosmetology teacher, and stumbled upon your dilema. "bleaching out" is the best thing to do, but you want to make sure you don't lighten too pale. if you lighten it too much it can cause the color to fade faster. so lighten it, use something like "ink works" (I think) by paul mitchell which is also conditioning a few times a month. or you can mix a little bit of your normal blue color with shampoo once every one or two weeks, depending on what kind of color it is. also, watch what kind of shampoo you use. color protecting is the best-stay away from clarifying, normalizing, and volumizing shampoos which will all fade color

What a bitch finding permanent hair dye in vivid colors. You can only buy the real stuff if you have a license and work for a salon, and even then you usually have to special order it. Hell, its easier to buy crackl! I had a friend who would order the real stuff through the salon he worked for but he got fired recently. I got so tired of having stains on my pillows and on my bathtub and the the whole fading process that my hair has been downright "normal" the last six months....

yeah it would be cool to have it permanent, i used manic panic and had to touch it up atleast once every two weeks cause it didn't last...i haven't tried special effects for blue but i know the red lasts a while with them.

you can get this at Walgreens and Walmart.

Ive been permanently blue for over a year now, I use stargazers and leave it in for a whole day, wash it out a little then dry (all after bleaching) for my hair at least, it stays in no matter how many times I wash it.

i've been wanting to dye my hair blue for a while now, and i wanted to get it right the firdt time. Can anyone help me?

ahh. i know the similar dilemna of all the people trying to find permanent blue hair color here... see ive always tinted my hair red, it got really light after a couple consecutive years of lightening with permanent red hair dye (my natural color was an actually pretty nice dark dark chestnut brownish black). then, in one accidental attempt to achieve something similar to my natural color, i used nice and easy soft black. soft black, my foot! my hair was jet black, pitch black, blue black..all those in a crazy mix with red splotches wherever the black didnt cover on hair that reached down to my lower waist. i cried for days at my ruined hair. =/ right now, the black has kinda faded and my natural color has almost been achieved, but there are still underlying red tints from an attempt to lighten the black with a dark brown color. i was going to dye my hair with a cold dark brown (meaning no warm red tones), and then bleach and dye the underlayers turquoise or blue. i do not trust semi-permanent hair color, its seriously crap, especially with my hair, and im sick of trying to find permanent blue dye and only finding blue black or w/e. i dont WANT blue BLACK! jeezee. i dont even know if i want to try to dye my hair now. i think ill just stick to the color i have now. i dont want to risk crying again if i mess this hair up again. i think i'll just stick to spending my money on piercings instead. =] (after recovering from my hair dying addiction ive now found myself addicted to piercings..tattoos are in the near future hopefully!) good luck on these blue hair catastrophes and desperations, guys.

SPLAT worked well for me- it was a brilliant dark blue that lasted about six weeks then gradually faded out to a grey-purple color...

I so know what ur talking about it seems impossible to get permanent (not semi) blue (not blue-black) hair dye.

I spend hours looking at web pages.

But I think I may have found something.
I haven't had the chance to use it yet but the box claims that it is permanent, so I have my hopes up.

I live in South Africa and getting permanent blue hair here seems to be impossible.

Even the salons don't have it.
I love my blue streaks but it's just so expensive to have them re-done ever 2 weeks.

bsides after I wash my hair once the white-blond of the bleach already starts to show and it makes my color look faded and grey.

I hoped I could buy a good product from the internet and then persuade my hair-dresser to use that. But it seems to be impossible to find anything.

If any1 has a good product, please let me kno.

The brand is Lolane, and it's permanent. Haven't tried it, but it looks nice and bright blue!

Anonymous said...

Lolane is horrible, I got the green and the blue off ebay. The blue turns platinum blond hair to a light denim color, and the green turns it to a yellow/green puke color. Not attractive at all. As for how long it lasts, I don't know. I only tested it on human hair extensions... thank god, and not my own head.

dear poor casper, unfortunately there is only things you can do to ensure the ultimate brilliance of the color. 1st thing that depends on is the porosity of your hair to begin with. you can strip too much out if you pre-lighten immensly, so to make sure your hair is healthy and pre lightened 3-4 shades is step 1. then apply color(manic panic, funky color, rusk Scream, paul mitchell Ink works, anything that looks very vibrant,) unfortunately I've not discovered one better than the next, it has to do with the canvas more than the paint. then sit under dryer to pennetrate cuticle as much as possible. mix equal part color preserving shampoo and blue color and use this to help prevent fading. last is make sure you rinse out shampoo and conditioner with as cool/ tepid water as possible to prevent horrible fading. hot water is astringent and it opens your cuticle allowing the color to slip out 2-3x faster, while cold water closes the cuticle leaving it stronger and less suseptable to fading. the problem with the "unnatural" colors are that the molecule is emmensly larger than that of natural colors, making it really hard to remain in the inner core of your hair, that's why the structure of your hair is the key to color brilliance.I'm a color educator @ an Aveda salon and this is my field of specialty.hope to have helped some.

you need to make sure to use quality worth color safe shampoo and conditioner. the ph balance of your hair is way different than that of non color treated hair. if you don't treat it as so expect texture change, dryness, loss of shine, or bounce and extreme fading.

I use Manic Panic After Midnight Blue, and after letting it sit for 40 minutes under a hair dryer, it lasts for about a month (fading from a dark, dark blue to a gorgeous electric turqoise in the end). My hair is naturally dark brown, so my stylist bleached it out as much as possible first. I use Clairol purple shampoo to keep it from greening, and Pantene Breakage Defense conditioner every day. I'm on my second month of blue hair, and I love it.

My only unusual tip is that if you're doing any kind of semi-permanent hair color, go to Lowes, buy a cheap plastic drop cloth in the paint department and some outdoor-use duct tape, and tarp off the walls of your shower as much as possible. It'll save you a lot of scrubbing time later.

I HAVE BEEN EVERY COLOR OF THE RAINBOW PLATINUM WHITE BLONDE TO BLACKEST BLUE BLACK AND ABOUT TO PUT BLUE STREAKS IN MY BLACK HAIR I WOULD SUGGEST ONLY BLEACHING ONCE IF YOU BLEACH TWICE YOU ARE LEAVING YOUR HAIR TOO POROUS WHICH YOU MIGHT THINK WOULD BE BEST FOR IT TO ABSORB MORE BLUE BUT IN TURN YOUR OVER BLEACHED HAIR WITH LET THE BLUE WASH OUT AS FAST AT IT WENT IN BLEACHING IT ONCE MAKES IT POROUS ENOUGH AND LEAVES SOME SUBSTANCE FOR THE BLUE TO STICK TO IN ADDITION, EXTRA BLEACH MEANS MORE DAMAGE AND THE NEED TO DEEP CONDITION AND ITS A CATCH 22 DEEP CONDITION WILL PULL SOME OF THE COLOR OUT HOPE I WAS HELPFUL

OH I FORGOT TO MENTION CLAIROL HAS A PERMANENT BLUE IN THERE COMPLIMENTS LINE MIX WITH 2O VOL DEVELOPER

dont know how old this post/blog is...but ive heard alot from friends about 'stargazer' products...but they are only semi perm colors...
avail on ebay or do a ask.com search for stargazer cosmetics...

although im not into blue..

I usually use special effects to dye parts of my hair blue, but the parts that I dye blue are usually very very bleached and they hold the color well. I reapply it every 2 weeks to maintain the bright blue, it does fade quickly.

i dyed my hair blue and it lasted for two months and i didn't see blue water while takin a shower but after exactly two months passing it all washed out...kinda a bummer but stayed in for two whole months...Yay!...but my hair is naturally blonde so its already really really light so i didnt bleach it...so not sure if this helped you or not...

I just purchased blue hair color from Sallys Beauty Saupply. I am about to try it out now so im not sure exactly how it will turn out but if you want to try it, its called Clairol professionals mix tones... cool... blue and you mix it with Clairol professionals premium creme demi permanente developer...

I agree with the people who said if you've over-processed your hair, it will fade much more quickly. My hair goes down to my butt, and over time, I bleached a large portion of it, haha. There is a certain area where I over-bleached it, and this area fades sooooo fast, and turns such an ugly color, it's ridiculous. Even when the rest of my hair is still holding the color nicely, that spot will be a faded, hideous color.

So far, my favorite brand is Splat! It comes with bleach and dye for $10.99 (sometimes on sale for $6.99!). You can find it at Walgreens and Rite Aid. The bleach has a blue toner in it, to get out the orangey brassy colors. The dye is at least as good, if not better than most I've tried. It's very vibrant.

I've found that if I dye my hair a dark red/burgundy first, and let it fade for a couple of weeks, THEN do the dye, it seems to last a lot longer, and doesn't turn that ugly grayish-blue when it fades. Instead it fades to a light purple, which is more tolerable. The blue will be dark, not electric, but as long as it lasts, I don't care. Besides, I like it dark, and it comes in handy when your workplace tends to frown on funky-colored hair. When it's freshly colored and dark, it can sooorrrrta pass for "blue-black" when you aren't in the sun. :P

I also forgot to say that I bleach my hair and then shampoo it with a clarifying shampoo, DON'T condition it, and blow it dry. THEN I put on the dye, and wrap my hair/head up in saran wrap, and keep warm. I allow it to soak for at least 3-4 hours before rinsing and conditioning.

I heard that through Salons, you can get ELUMEN, and that it's about as close to a permanent blue as you can get.

I don't have the patience to read through all of these - but Jerome Russell's Punky Color[bought mine from folica.com, as I couldn't find it locally] has worked best for me. It says semi permanent, but it would *not* wash out for me. I wore their turquoise for months, called it my 'bionic blue'. Only had to touch it up when I had to do my roots - otherwise that stuff would not die.

I'm not exactly how old all these people are but i guess you can say im "young", anyway i am bleaching my hair for the first time tomorrow and the only thing that scares me is the burning and how long does it take the bleach to actually starting making your hair fall out ( I DEFINITELY don't want my hair to fall out but i just want to be aware)
also i've been researching all night haha

if you bleach your hair, then dye it with semi permanent star gazers the next day, it fixes in and wont come out. ive been trying to dye my hair blue for quite some time and not gotten it to work. by accident i stumbled across this method when i tried to hide a half lightened head with semi permenant red stargazer. this was at least 4 months ago and i still have the red in my hair, albeit a faded version.

i have blue hair, and i sometimes have the same problem as you where it washes out too fast. my hair is naturally black, so i use manic panic bleach and leave it on for as long as possible... usually about an hour and a half until it's white. then i put on manic panic "after midnight blue" and leave it overnight with a shower cap on. the result is very dark blue hair at the beginning that lightens a little bit every wash but never turns green! if you wash your hair in cold water and shampoo every few days, it stays for longer. i would use a permanant dye, but manic panic is my fave cause it's cruelty-free... i can't find any permanant dyes that aren't tested on animals.
